Fraud Prevention

Fraud Prevention Information

Fraud prevention is always on the top of our minds at Franklin State Bank. Education on fraud goes a long way when there are simple things to help protect yourself. We have created this guide to provide our customers fraud prevention strategies.

Types of Fraud

Internet, mail and phone scam instances have been exploding and education is the only way to prevent them at this point.

Fraud Prevention Strategies

Debit Card Limits

At Franklin State Bank, we set daily limits on our debit cards for your protection. However, if you have a need for a higher limit on a day or weekend, give us a call. We would be happy to help you raise your limit for a limited number of days.

Shazam

If a charge goes through your debit card that looks outside of the usual, you will be notified through Shazam. Please know that Shazam will never ask for your personal information including an account number and will only ask if a charge is valid.

Safely Store Sensitive Information

Safely keeping documents with sensitive information will add a layer of security. This includes shredding all receipts that have personal information. Work with reliable companies that understand the importance of fraud protection. No sensitive information should be shared via emails or will be requested through text messages.

Additional Strategies

  • Don’t let strangers manipulate you!
  • Keep computer and phone security software up to date.
  • Confirm internet sellers are legitimate. If the price seems too good to be true, it likely is.
  • Don’t let embarrassment or fear keep you from reporting potential fraud.

Internet Scams

Internet scams are on the rise. At Franklin State Bank, we want to take a moment to remind you to take the following precautions when utilizing these resources.

  • Passwords: They are there to protect your online accounts. Create strong passwords and change them regularly.
  • Monitor: Monitor your accounts and credit for fraud.
  • The Power of Delete: Don’t click on suspicious looking messages, texts or emails. Simply delete them.
  • Social Media: We encourage you to not share your personal information and make sure your settings are private.
  • Public Wi-Fi: If you are not at home, do not send your personal information using public wi-fi. Even when on a secure network, such as your home, be smart about how and when information is shared.

Phone Scams

Phone scams are still a very common problem. At Franklin State Bank, we encourage you to add numbers that you need, even businesses like ours, to your cell phones’ contact list. When a number you do not recognize calls you, do not answer. The moment you answer, your number is signed up for calling in the future.

  • Sign Up for the “Do Not Call” List
  • Never give personal information over the phone. Remember, if your friend, grandchild or other family member needs information, they will ask you through a more reliable form of communication.
  • If you accidentally answer a scammer, do not feel the need to be courteous and stay on the phone.

Franklin State Bank is Your Resource
